Cardioversion

Preparing for the procedure

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your procedure, except your morning medications and small sips of water.
  • Insulin-dependent diabetics need to adjust their insulin doses accordingly.
  • Oral diabetic medications should be held the morning of the procedure.
  • Prior to entering the hospital, notify your cardiologist if you have ever had a reaction to sedatives, anesthetics, or any other drugs.

What to expect

After you arrive at the hospital, you will be connected to the monitoring equipment. Vital signs will be taken. An IV (intravenous line) will be started. You will then receive sedating medications. When you awake, you will not likely remember the procedure. You will be monitored for a few hours before being discharged home. You will need another person to drive you home.
